There are three weeks left for Northern Ireland secondary school students to enter the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. BT is encouraging young people to submit their one-page project idea by 25 September. The theme for BTYSTE 2019 is ‘It Starts Here’ because, for many past participants, the Exhibition has marked the beginning of a successful career in science and technology.

A 40-strong team of keen cyclists from BT are using pedal power to raise money for charity. Their cycling challenge will take them on a 30-mile round trip along the North Coast, starting and finishing at the Scenic Inn in Ballymoney on Thursday 28th June. It's hoped the charity cycle ride will raise around £6,000 for Marie Curie.

100 members of BT staff, friends and family are turning their Belfast office into a Soccer Aid pledge centre on Sunday 10th June in aid of Unicef. They've volunteered to answer calls, whilst two star-studded teams – Robbie William’s England and Usain Bolt’s World XI - battle it out on the pitch. So, if you make a donation by phone, there’s a sporting chance your call will be answered in Belfast.

Having access to good broadband speeds is now up there as one of the deciding factors for prospective homebuyers and tenants in Northern Ireland, according to a new survey commissioned by BT’s NI Networks. The results of the survey revealed that three out of five people said that having fibre broadband in their household was very important, rising to seven out of 10 among 18 to 35-year olds.

BT is creating 130 new apprenticeship and graduate jobs across Northern Ireland as part of a new UK-wide drive to recruit the best tech talent available. The NI new recruits will be located in Belfast, Derry, Coleraine, Dungannon, Enniskillen and Newry. Roles include Tech Design, Tech Operations, Software, IT, Sales, Finance, Customer Experience and Engineering.

BT is on the look-out for 15 young people in Fermanagh who are ready to kick-start their working life with a free work placement in Enniskillen. The three-week Work Ready programme starts on Monday 26th March and is open to anyone aged 16 to 24 not currently in education, employment or training. The course combines hands-on work experience and tech know-how with coaching and training.

BT has announced that Northern Ireland’s first Community Fibre Partnership will provide access to ultrafast broadband to a primary school and more than fifty homes and businesses on the edge of Clonmore Village in Dungannon. It’s hoped the new service will be available as early as June this year.

Over 150 students from across Northern Ireland took part in a day of design and problem-solving activities - organised by CCEA and BT. The Sci Tech workshop at Stranmillis University College was designed to develop their interest in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and encourage more NI schools to take part in the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition.

More than forty per cent of Northern Ireland Primary Schools have signed up to a BT-sponsored initiative to boost tech literacy in the classroom in its first year. The Barefoot Computing Project works with teachers to help them develop the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to teach computer science and BT is urging more schools to get involved.

The Lisburn Enterprise Organisation has opened a new two-storey, high-spec ‘incubator site’ for small tech start-ups that require ultrafast internet access. BT’s NI Networks division installed a multiple-occupancy Fibre to the Premises connection during the construction phase and is urging developers and architects to follow suit and ‘future proof’ buildings by planning for ultrafast broadband.

BT’s Northern Ireland Networks division has made G.fast available to over 4000 premises in Antrim Town as part of a pilot project announced last year. By using existing copper wires, this hybrid fibre broadband technology involves minimal disruption and provides a basis for many new services with considerable economic benefits.

Beating off stiff competition at this year's BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, Harvey Donnelly from Wellington College in Belfast won the ‘BT Northern Ireland Best Project’ Award for his ‘Modelling Electrochemical Cell Reactions’ entry. The ‘MATRIX Best Overall School Northern Ireland’ Award was picked up by St Killian’s College from Co. Antrim.

BT has opened a multi-million pound Innovation Centre in Belfast, which will play a crucial role in its global research and development capability, focusing on advanced research into the Internet of Things, cyber security and 5G communications . Invest NI has offered support of £9 million for the creation of this world-class R&D facility, which will see BT working with Ulster University.
