New fibre-based broadband services are now available to around a further 170 homes and businesses in Kirkwall thanks to a UK first, where unused payphones have been replaced with a superfast fibre broadband cabinet. Engineering requirements for the new technology meant that the only suitable location for the new fibre cabinet was where two red payphone kiosks were situated.

More than 100 homes in the village of Gatehead near Kilmarnock now have access to much faster broadband speeds for the first time – thanks to the Digital Scotland Superfast broadband rollout. The Gatehead homes were too far from their original fibre broadband street cabinet to see much improvement in speed. So engineers from Openreach, BT’s local network business, rearranged the network.

People living in Edinburgh and Glasgow will be among the first in the UK to benefit from the new ultrafast broadband technology being developed by Openreach, BT’s local network business. The two Scottish cities will be pilot locations for G.fast, which provides download speeds of up to 330 Megabits per second (Mbps). The news was today welcomed by the Scottish Government and business leaders.
